Bumbu Merah means “red spice paste” in Indonesian and is commonly used in Sulawesi, Sumatra, and other parts of Indonesia to bring bold, spicy, and savory flavors to meats, poultry, seafood, and even tofu/tempeh dishes.

It’s a rich red spice paste, made by blending red chilies with a variety of aromatics and spices. The deep red color typically comes from dried red chilies or fresh red chilies combined with tomatoes or sometimes red bell peppers (optional for color and sweetness).
